No matter how good, say, the Emotional may be to render Thomas Newman-esque pianophrases with, you won’t last two bars with it if you’re attempting to do something à la manière de virtuoso Liszt, Prokofiev or Busoni. Which means that, if your looking to buy a virtual instrument primarily to render classically styled pieces with, there’s more to making a wise choice than just personal preference.

If you’re aiming for, say, a classical pianosound, there is such as thing as an established timbre and a certain character and colour which make for a clear reference with a long and well-documented, often-recorded history. Man, if I could just test this in my studio I would be able to solve this dilemma! I also have their Black Grand Ambient which is good as well, but is lacking that “aliveness” I instantly get from the Vienna Imperial demos. For example I have the White Grand from Sampletekk and its good in a dense mix, but lacks some body and that emotion when solo’d IMO.

Pros: More cost effective vs Imperial and comes with the choice of two pianos (I seem to like the K2 & YC5 but open to suggestions).

I downloaded the demo and it does indeed sound good and the playability is excellent, but unfortunately I cannot download and directly compare it with the Vienna Imperial! So I’m looking for others opinions to help me think this through as I would hate to spend so much money on the Imperial only to be disappointed. Perhaps this is due to harmonics or overtones with sympathetic resonance or something.īut then I started reading the VI forums and saw that many people said the PianoTeq was there “desert island” piano. Almost all sounded fine to me, but it wasn't until the Imperial that it really effected me emotionally. It was really an eye opening experience for me, as I wasn’t expecting such as noticeable difference in how the different pianos made me feel.

I watched a great youtube video comparing a whole bunch of different sampled pianos, and was amazed at how alive the Vienna Imperial sounded! (last in the video) I dont know how to explain it, but it just sounded alive and inspiring, where the others sounded flat by comparison.
